The seventh release on Alternate Take Records is a vinyl EP compiling Texas' finest representatives in the Hip-Hop/Soul/Beats continuum. All of these artists have been picking up steam with a steady flow of solid releases over the last few years.
The Strange Fruit Project has been everywhere lately and S1?s brilliant production has gotten love from major cats like Pete Rock and ?uestlove from The Roots. Clean, soulful hip-hop! Headkrack and The ARE bring that street-level raw dog vibe on "Grizzly" - sick flow, sick beat. The ARE has done work for rappers like Truth Enola and the Lone Catalysts. Bavu Blakes is featured with a remix of "bah-voo" from his Caroline distributed CD Create & Hustle. Hydroponic Sound System pitches in on the remix duties complementing Bavu's flow with tight drum programming and thick moving bass.
The flip side features club-oriented instrumentals. Nick Nack's spacey b-boy cut "No Spectators" cooks with live congas and bass, while Hydro's "Percy Keeps His Disco Dubby" is a mid-tempo cut with a Latin disco bent. There are also bonus beats for all the vocal cuts.
Both SFP and Hydro have landed songs on the last two Scion CDs (Beat Junkies & Haul&Mason), with over 500,000 copies in circulation and all of these artists have garnered favorable reviews in the best electronic music magazines (XLR8R, URB, etc...) This EP serves as an introduction of what's to come with more collabs featuring these artists - stay tuned!
