Special musical guests El Michaels Affair (feat. members of Antibalas & The Dap Kings), from Brooklyn, New York
Soundsystem by the WAXPLOITATION! DJs
Using imagery that is all but forgotten in this age of slick, computer driven design, Austin-based artist Noel Waggener reasserts the magic and beauty of silkscreen printing and the subculture it represents. Known for organic designs and striking poster art (his work is included in the recently published Art of Modern Rock), Waggener has recently begun pushing his love for printmaking and graphic design into the realm of site-specific mural projects. DiverseWorks will host a week long residency and present a new silkscreened mural installation that is a continuation of a recent series of improvisational prints. In addition, a series of prints Waggener made in collaboration with Satch Grimley for Revenant Records’ Albert Ayler boxed set will also be on display. Waggener was recently announced as a 2006 Grammy Award nominee for his art direction of the Ayler boxed set.
For the opening reception, DiverseWorks is proud to present a live set of funk, soul and Latin grooves from El Michaels Affair of Brooklyn, NY. Featuring members of The Dap Kings and Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, their new critically acclaimed record Sounding Out the City has become an instant deep funk classic. In early 2006, El Michaels will hit the road as the backing band for the Wu Tang Clan.
